The name “iPod” was inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Vinnie Chieco who named the device told Wired in 2006: “As soon as I saw the white iPod, I thought 2001… Then it was just a matter of adding the ‘i’ prefix, as in ‘iMac.’”
